Ever since I published "Poor Richards Almanack" in 1732 I have been interested in marketing strategies. How do you get someone to remember you and then "sign-up" (or buy your product)? For example, you might remember me as the inventor of bifocal glasses. If you were in need of bifocals, and I was selling them in your area, and you remembered me, there is a good chance you would buy from me. After all, I am memorable. Didn't I discover electricity by flying kites in a storm? (OK, I really didn't discover it.) But, if you are not currently in need of bifocals, I would want you to carry that memory until you did need them. Hello, I'm Benjamin Franklin and I, too, am very delighted you stopped by for a visit.
You might, also, remember me for being among the very few "Founding Fathers" who signed both the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Constitution of the United States in 1787. My age facilitated that probability. I was, after all, the oldest delegate, at 84 years old, to attend the Constitutional Convention.
Assemblyroom - Independence Hall - Philadelphia
Philadelphia was my adopted home town, so it was a little easier for me to attend the convention than for most of my co-delegates from the other colonies. And, it was a good thing for me that it was held in Philadelphia. I was in so much pain, for much of the time, that I could only be in attendance if someone carried me in and out of the Assemblyroom of Independence Hall (it was called the Pennsylvania State House in those years). I had the gout, you see. Hey, don't even ask.
But, I digress. One of the reasons I chose the name "Poor Richard's Almanack" was a way of getting the reader to remember my product. Poor Richard was a unique title and one strategy of getting my customers to re-order the book year after year. A second strategy was to prolong its useable life by filling it with aphorisms and proverbs. Almost no one would dispose of my Almanack during its useage cycle - a year. Many kept it around permanently. I salted it with witty sayings and memorable homilies. Some of my maxims are still in use during your life time. "A penny saved is a penny earned", etc. etc.
The bottom line is that I made my product both useful and memorable and they kept coming back for more each year. In the mid 1700's it was considered a "Best Seller" eventually reaching 10,000 book sales per year.
